From the Ottoman period to the early Republic period of Turkey, sea baths in Istanbul evolved into a beach culture. However, today, this culture is gradually slipping away from us. While we can no longer derive the healing benefits of salty water due to environmental pollution, this program aims to find healing from the plants within Büyükada’s ecosystem. Additionally, it seeks to teach how these plants grow, how they can be utilized, and preserved. Just like the island’s inhabitants, by observing the direction of the wind and the position of sea creatures along the shore after spending a night in here and take a moon bath in interior pool which is located in the middle of courtyard (just like sea bath plan layout), we can still find healing in the salty waters of Büyükada and revive our beach culture. With my design, DENFA, which stands for sea and healing in turkish, I aim to honor both the heritage of the island and the maritime culture of Istanbul.
